One of the most common misconceptions of 12-Step related conferences is that they are AA meetings, and since “there are no dues or fees for AA membership,” no fees should be required to attend. 12-Step conferences are special events, attendance is voluntary and people pay to attend these – they are different than our local meetings.
AA World Service (WSO) recognizes this for their own conferences. For example, AA WSO doesn’t offer scholarships or sliding scale registration. All attendees must pay the full registration in order to attend; that includes attendance at the main AA speaker meetings. Quoted below is the registration policy from the 2010 International Convention of Alcoholics Anonymous:
“Attendance at this special celebration is voluntary and, as responsible A.A. members, ‘we pay our own way.’ The International Convention is paid for by those A.A.’s who participate in it.”
Like other conferences, San Diego Feeling Good is a special event. It takes a year of planning and preparation, it also requires a substantial amount of money to host. Feeling Good is self supporting through registration fees and fundraisers. The 7th Tradition reminds us “we pay our own way.”
